History of Old Bay Seasoning:

Old Bay is synonymous with Mid-Atlantic crab boils and barbecues, but did you know that the seasoning was invented by Gustav Brunn, a German immigrant? He started the Baltimore Spice Company 16 days after fleeing a Nazi German concentration camp. His family brought with them from Germany an industrial spice grinder, which is still on display at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.

Old Bay was initially sold mostly to meatpackers for sausages, hot dogs and bologna before finding its way to the seafood eaten today. Originally called, “Delicious Brand Shrimp and Crab Seasoning,” the name was shortened to, “Old Bay,” a name taken from the Old Bay Line, a steamliner which sailed between Baltimore and Norfolk, VA. The seasoning includes red pepper, black pepper, celery, salt, and paprika. It is now owned by McCormick, and you can find it everywhere – printed on shirts, shoes, aprons, and even infused into vodka.

Cilantro is popular in Indian cuisine; the name for it in Hindi is dhania. In India, cilantro may be used in chana masala, aloo gobi, and vegetable samosas. The herb also features in various dishes from the Sichuan region of China. It is often used in soups and as a garnish.

Pick up the spice, along with a recipe at one of the Coffey County Library branches.
