The timing could not have been better for the renewed sponsorship by the Coffey County Genealogical Society of the popular Ancestry.com resource which is offered free of charge at all six Coffey County Library Branches. The Genealogical Society has sponsored the resource since 2009 when it was first awarded as a way to remember long time society member and community supporter, Duane Fitch.
With a little help from a library staff member, even a novice researcher can quickly access thousands of databases with a variety of content including census, vital, church, court, and immigration records, draft registration cards, and thousands of historical maps and images.
“We can’t thank the Genealogical Society enough for their continued support of Ancestry.com,” said Coffey County Administrator Brandon Hines. “In 2015, over 13,000 unique genealogical searches were conducted at libraries across the county on Ancestry.com. It is well used and people are always surprised by the amount of information they find and how easy it is to conduct a search.”
The Genealogical Society meets every 2nd Thursday of the month at the Genealogical Room of the Burlington Branch Library. The public is welcome to all meetings, and society members will be happy to help individuals with searches for family members.
